Chen-Ex Winter Newsletter and Workshops 2008 Happy New Year, 2008! Chen-Ex is happy to announce several exciting events that have happened and are going to happen this winter session. Please note that the winter workshops begin the week of January 22nd and run through mid-March. Chen-Ex Ten Year Anniversary Dinner This year, Chen-Ex will be celebrating it tenth year as a vital role in the Chenery and the Belmont Community. We are excited to be able to celebrate this milestone at our annual Chen-Ex Family Dinner and Variety Show! This year we are welcoming past and present Chen-Ex students, families, and staff to the event on March 12th, 2008. Keep an eye out for more information and invitation, Save the date! Coat Drive Chen-Ex collected New and Gently used Children’s coats and clothing to donate to Cradles to Crayons. The drive was a huge success, and as a community, Chen-Ex helped someone else have a warm, memorable and fun winter! Chen-Ex Idol After months of practice and hard work the students that participated in Chen-Ex Idol performed in December. Congratulations to all the participants. A special congrats to Sharaya and Ann-Marie for their winning dance performance. All the contestants performed a second show for the residence at the Belmont Nursing Home. Model UN A group of nine Chen-Ex students participated in The Model United Nations Conference on December 1st. The Chen-Ex participants worked hard in preparation for conference by working on debate skills, doing research on various world issues, and studying UN policy and procedure. Our students represented South Africa and India. This upcoming conference we are representing Algeria, Argentina, Chile, and Georgia at the Bentley College MUN conference. Check-in and Snack Many students have commitments directly after school is dismissed. Students must first check-in in person with Chen-Ex staff and sign out for their destination. Due to the school rule of no food outside the cafeteria, students may have snack upon their return to the cafeteria at 3:30. Chen-Ex Cell Phone We have added an emergency cell phone to our evacuation procedure. This phone is for emergency phone calls only. We are in the process of programming with parent/guardians cell phone numbers. In addition to calling parents, we will send a text message to the cell phone contacts. If you need to update this information, please do so at pick up or email Kendra with the subject tile of “Cell phone update.” The number of the Chen-Ex cell pone is (617) 999-0071. ![]() Daily Happenings ![]() There is always something exciting and creative happening in daily Arts and Crafts. Project vary from holiday décor to sewing projects to surrealist art. There is always something new and innovative happening in at the A & C table! ![]() Chen-Ex Sports Monday through Thursday 3:30-4:30 Coordinator: Thomas Chen-Ex is proud to offer a comprehensive sports program for the students that will begin in October with Flag Football. The Chen-Ex Sports League offers students the chance to participate in a wide variety of fun and competitive athletic activities. Students make their own teams and team names. Sports are open to all students, and everyone is able to sign up for each sport as they wish. Those who are not interested in joining a team can still participate when substitutes are needed. Each sport "season" consists of a month long season, playoffs and an All-Star Game. Team statistics are recorded and awards are given out at the end of the year for excellent Sportsmanship, participation and athletic achievement and improvement. Fall Enrichment Workshops Monday: Yoga- Monday 2:30-3:30 Yoga is a science that has been practiced for thousands of years. It consists of Ancient Theories, observations and principles about the mind and body connection. Yoga is aimed to unite the mind, the body, and the spirit. People practice Yoga to feel fitter, be more energetic, and be happier and peaceful. Limit 12 students. International Dance Workshop- 3:30-4:30 This class is a fun mix of cultural dances from all over the world. From the Hawaiian Hula, to Latin Cumbia, to the Chinese Fan dance and contemporary "hip-hop", the students will be learning a variety of styles. Dancing can teach kids about the world and encourages the physical, and creative development of each child. No prior dance experience needed! Limit 12 students. Scrapbooking- 3:30-4:30 Students will learn new and creative ways to display memories in a scrapbook. They will have the opportunity to share ideas with classmates and will learn how to chronologically organize photos and memorabilia.Beginning 1/28, Limit 12 students. Tuesday: Playmaking-3:30-4:30
Playmaking is a chance to collaborate with other students to create an original play. In the first half of the class the piece will come together through improvisation, movement activities, scene work, poetry, and script writing. Students will learn the importance of working together and have a blast while doing so. The second half of playmaking is devoted to rehearsing the original piece. We will have a mini performance in March at the family dinner and a full performance in May. Limit 15 students. Book Club - 3:30-5:00 Book club is a chance for you to learn about different books and authors from Mrs. Ellard and other students. This is also a chance to tell other book lovers about the books you have read and loved! Limit 15 students. Poetry Writing - 3:30-4:30 Students will create poetry through real life experiences, emotions and everyday inspirations. They will learn techniques of poetry writing and incorporate multiple forms of art and use different creative methods to help make each poem their own. Five poems will be written per student using different forms of poetry and will be put together to create a book of poetry. Some will include observing nature, studying old photographs, drawing/sketching, and looking at famous paintings and other artwork throughout history. Limit 15 students. Wednesday: Game Building Workshop - 3:30-4:30 Want to make your own video game? If you want to be a hot-shot game designer, this is a good place to start. Specify the game storyline, strategy and logic. Design graphics for dragons, heroes, pirates and other whacky characters. Lay out fantasy settings. Record outrageous sound effects. Integrate all the components. Test the game with your friends and then post it on the Web for the world to play. Let the games begin! Many Voice One Song:
Belmont/Uganda United - 3:30-4:30 This class will encourage students' to look closely at the daily life of their peers in another country and at their world. They will learn to observe and write about these observations in letters of correspondence to students in the Namugongo Fund for Special Children. Students will become familiar with another country, its challenges**, its politics and its people. They will form a personal connection with a student from a culture very different from their own and potentially continue the correspondence after the class ends. ** Please note that all students who will participate will be required to have parental consent. Please see attached permission slip. Thursday: Middle School Model UN - 2:30-3:30 This past December nine Chen-Ex students participated in the Boston area at the Regional Model UN Conference. The students choose countries that they represented. They worked in groups researching their countries policy on topics that the real UN is dealing with today. Chen-Ex will represent in a conference at Bentley College on March 3rd, 2008 Clay-Hand Building - 3:30-4:30 Learn basic hand building skills and create your own individual masterpiece! You will learn skills such as pinch technique, coil technique, and slab building technique. You will also get to choose from a variety of glazes to add pizzazz to your unique creation.Beginning 1/24 Improv-3:30-4:30 This year Chen-Ex will be offering an improvisation class. You can look forward to fun and creative improv games. There is a performance element for all those interested in showcasing the skills that have been taught over the eight-week course. Learn to think on your feet and to become an active listener, and have fun while doing it! Continuing 1/17 Friday: Jewelry Making II- 3:30-4:30 This workshop will be a more complex and detailed Jewelry class where the students will learn to make jewelry from scratch by designing and making his/her own beads and working with wire. The class will be able to make original pieces, such as necklaces, bracelets, earrings, pins and hairclips.Beginning 1/25, Limit 15 students. Animation- 3:30-4:30 Learn to make your own animation using a film camera, drawing. storyboards and other classic techniques, as well as other techniques like character creation and flipbooks. And watch your creations come to life! |
