Chen-Ex Spring 2009 Newsletter
Happy Spring!
Welcome to the Chen-Ex Spring Newsletter. As always, we have listed reminders, updates, and changes in the upcoming spring months. In addition, we are excited to offer new and continuing enrichment programs over the next ten weeks, beginning April 6th and ending June 5th. Please look over the options and return the attached form to the sign-out desk.

Walk for Hunger
Chen-Ex will be participating in Project Bread's Walk for Hunger for the 7th year in a row. "It all begins with food. Good food nourishes the body and the spirit. With regular meals, a child is free to grow, to think, to ask a question, to tell a joke. Being chronically hungry is the fate of thousands of children in Massachusetts. Help us change that." Walk with us toward social change on Sunday, May 3rd. Look for details about the walk at the front desk.
Chen-Ex Family Night
Join us for our annual Family Night, Tuesday, April 14th at 6:30. This is a great opportunity to meet other Chen-Ex families while being treated to dinner and a show. The Chen-Ex parent board serves up a great meal at this casual evening and the Chen-Ex students provide entertainment following dinner. Please RSVP so that we can plan accordingly.
Playmaking
The students in Nicole Heisler's playmaking workshops and Christy Betit's theater workshops have been working hard all year on creating original theatrical productions. Come see the fruits of their labor, it is sure to be entertaining! The 5th and 6th graders will perform on either May 22nd, or May 29th (TBD). The 7th and 8th graders will perform on either June 4th or 11th (TBD).
Chen-Ex Sports Awards
The annual Chen-Ex Sports Awards ceremony will take place on June 16th. During this presentation we celebrate sportsmanship and achievement by those who have participated in the Chen-Ex sports program at any point during the school year.
Chen-Ex Cook Out
The annual Chen-Ex cookout is coming up soon! At this fun, all day event, students can participate in all kinds of activities. We hold (to name a few) water balloon tosses, obstacle course, homerun derby, tie dye, and of course: grill up some hamburgers and hot dogs (vegetarian options will be available). It is a terrific way for the Chen-Ex students to celebrate the closing of the school year. It has really become a fun tradition for both staff and students. Date TBD and will be posted at the front desk.
Last Day of School
The last day of school (pending no more snow days) is scheduled for June 23rd. This is a half day of school and Chen-Ex does NOT run on this day. The last day of Chen-Ex is Monday, June 22nd.
Housekeeping Notes:
Absences
Please remember to call or email if your child is going to be absent from school and Chen-Ex. Although we do get the Chenery attendance list, they are not always updated and to avoid any confusion we need to get notification as well. Also, if you do plan on email an absence, please do so before 1:00pm.
Check-in and Snack
Many students have commitments directly after school is dismissed. Students must first check-in in person with Chen-Ex staff and sign out for their destination. Due to the school rule of no food outside the cafeteria, students may have snack upon their return to the cafeteria at 3:30.
E-Mail Notices
Many of my communications are done through e-mail. If you have not given me an e-mail address and you have one, it would be appreciated if you could do so. If you have given me your address, and are not receiving my e-mails, let me know so I can make the necessary corrections.
Lost and Found
We encourage all students to be responsible for their own belongings. Many students have similar, if not the same, clothing, lunch bags, etc. Items without names are put in the school's lost and found, which is outside of the cafeteria doors. Any belongings that have name identification, the Chen-Ex staff will put in the Chen-Ex office.

Sports are open to all students, and everyone is able to sign up for each sport as they wish. Those who are not interested in joining a team can still participate when substitutes are needed. Each sport “season” consists of a month long season, playoffs and an All-Star Game. Team statistics are recorded and awards are given out at the end of the year for excellent Sportsmanship, participation and athletic achievement and improvement. The sports that will be offered this year will include soccer, handball, floor hockey and ultimate frisbee. Chen-Ex will also host tournaments in indoor/outdoor activities such as Ping-Pong, Tennis, Chess, scrabble and Magic.
Schedules may change due to weather and time restrictions.
Sign-up, practice and playoff schedule will be posted on bulletin board in cafeteria
Casual Friday: Friday sports programming will give way to pick-up team games as well as alternative games. The students will be given the optional sports at the meeting, and games begin at 3:30.
Chen-Ex School Store:
Chen-Ex student volunteers and managers are responsible for the choosing and pricing of merchandise as well as customer service and operation of the store. Please note that managerial positions are filled first by seasoned store workers and upper school students in Chen-Ex. Also, because community service hours may be earned by working in the store, 6th graders will be given preference for scheduled work time.
