Chen-Ex Spring Newsletter and Workshops 2008 Thanks to all those who helped prepare for, performed in, and attended Chen-Ex Ten Year Celebration! It was a terrific turn out, the food was great, the MVOS raffle was a success, and the show was out of this world! In short, it was a BLAST! Project Bread's, A Walk for Hunger is coming up on May 4th. This will be the sixth year Chen-Ex students, families, and staff have participated as a team. Last year we had nearly 5o people representing Chen-Ex! Project Bread's mission is to alleviate, prevent, and ultimately end hunger in Massachusetts. The Walk for Hunger funds nearly 400 emergency food providers in 120 communities across Massachusetts and is a vital resource as food salvage programs face an alarming increase in need. Log onto http://projectbread.org to register as a member of our walking team under the name Chenery Extended Program or keep an eye out for sponsor forms at the front desk. 2008-2009 Enrollment Enrollment for next school year begins May 1st. At this time, spaces are open to current Chen-Ex students and siblings only. Applications will be available on our website, www.chenexprogram.org, at the sign out desk, and will be distributed to all 4th, 5th and 6th grade students. Enrollment opens to the Belmont community beginning May 16th. Check-in and Snack Many students have commitments directly after school is dismissed. Students must first check-in in person with Chen-Ex staff and sign out for their destination. Due to the school rule of no food outside the cafeteria, students may have snack upon their return to the cafeteria at 3:30. Chen-Ex Cell Phone We have added an emergency cell phone to our evacuation procedure. This phone is for emergency phone calls only. We are in the process of programming with parent/guardians cell phone numbers. In addition to calling parents, we will send a text message to the cell phone contacts. If you need to update this information, please do so at pick up or email Kendra with the subject tile of “Cell phone update.” The number of the Chen-Ex cell pone is (617) 999-0071. ![]() Daily Happenings ![]() There is always something exciting and creative happening in daily Arts and Crafts. Project vary from holiday décor to sewing projects to surrealist art. There is always something new and innovative happening in at the A & C table! ![]() Chen-Ex Sports Monday through Thursday 3:30-4:30 Coordinator: Thomas Chen-Ex Sport Schedule: April-Basketball May-June-Soccer Sign-up, practice and playoff schedule will be posted on bulletin board in cafeteria. Chen-Ex is proud to offer a comprehensive sports program for the students that will begin in October with Flag Football. The Chen-Ex Sports League offers students the chance to participate in a wide variety of fun and competitive athletic activities. Students make their own teams and team names. Sports are open to all students, and everyone is able to sign up for each sport as they wish. Those who are not interested in joining a team can still participate when substitutes are needed. Each sport “season” consists of a month long season, playoffs and an All-Star Game. Team statistics are recorded and awards are given out at the end of the year for excellent Sportsmanship, participation and athletic achievement and improvement. The sports that will be offered this year will include soccer, handball, floor hockey and ultimate frisbee. Chen-Ex will also host tournaments in indoor/outdoor activities such as Ping-Pong, Tennis, Chess, scrabble and Magic. Schedules may change due to weather and time restrictions. |
Spring Enrichment Workshops Listed here are the spring workshops. All workshops begin the week of April 7th and will run through the week of June 9th. Workshop space is limited. Please allow your child enough time to complete the workshop each day it runs. Enrollment is first come, first serve. Monday:
6th grade students Ann Marie and Sharaya are teaching a hip-hop moves and choreographing a dance that will be performed at the Chen-Ex Cook Out. Learn to dance like a pro (yo).Limit: 10 Students Belmont Media Center: Chen-Ex T.V. Instructor: Kristal Williams-Rowley Chen-Ex is working with Belmont’s local cable station, Belmont Media Center, or BMC. Chen-Ex students will write, act and produce scripts that will be shown on the Belmont cable access channel. The students will learn to use the graphics system, cameras, sound equipment, and how to direct their own production. The group will travel by foot, with an adult, to Belmont High School where the television studio is located. On most days, the group will leave at 2:45 PM and return to the middle school by 5:00 PM. Guardians are required to fill out a general release form for each child. Please pick your child up after 5:00 PM. Limit: 10 Students Learn photography concepts including: contrast, shadows, composition, image content and editing in this brand new workshop. You will edit and print your digital photographs. Finally, learn to use a 35 mm camera to express yourself through black and white film photography.Limit: 10 Students Tuesday:
Playmaking is a chance to collaborate with other students to create an original play. The group will have a full performance in May.Continuing Workshop, new participants welcome.Class Limit: 15 Students Book Club Aerobics Students will be learning different forms of aerobics and exercises. Both exercises and aerobics will be explored and conducted while listening to music to keep up energy. The aerobics will be done in a fun and comfortable environment where health and wellness will be promoted. Beginning 1/22. Class Limit 15 students Wednesday: Many Voice One Song: Belmont/Uganda United II– Photo Exchange This class will encourage students to look closely at the daily life of their peers in another country and at their own community. They will learn to observe and write about these observations in letters of correspondence to students in the Namugongo Fund for Special Children and on their group blog. Students will become familiar with another country, its challenges**, its politics and its people. They will form a personal connection with a student from a culture very different through the photography and a conference call to Uganda.Limit: 20 Students ** Please note that all students who will participate will be required to have parental consent. Red Cross First Aid/CPR Learn the lifesaving skill of first Aid and CPR. Students who would like to participate in this class are required to attend ALL three sessions. If you know you cannot make it to each complete session, please allow another student to utilize the space.Class Limit: 15 Juggling Like to clown around? This four -eek mini-course offers students a chance to learn the basics of juggling with 2,3, and up to 4 objects. Learn something new, have fun, and develop a skill you will have for the rest of your life! Class Limit: 12 Bottle Rockets In this workshop students will design, build, and launch their own bottle rockets. They will learn the physics of how water propelled rockets work, as well as build their own rockets from scratch and launch them at distances of over 100 yards. The workshop will culminate with a distance competition on the Chenery field. Students will work in teams of two and be responsible for bringing in their own empty two liter soda bottles. Class Limit: 12 Thursday: Over the course of 8 weeks we will watch four films that are short films and documentaries. We will watch each film and then come together for a group discussion. There will be questionnaires and the opportunity to keep journal thoughts to help aid our discussions. Each student will also be able to critique the films for other students to get recommendations for a good movie. Class Limit: 15 Soap Box Racer Your mission is to design and build the fastest, badest soap-box derby hot rod in the land. Groups of three will build a hot rod from wood, boxes, and local hardware store parts. This mission requires teamwork. Paint and decorate your invention so it looks great on camera. Then climb aboard and test your racing skills, by racing your creation around the Gran Prix obstacle course. You must be fast and look cool! Class Limit: 9 Improv This year Chen-Ex will be offering an improvisation class. You can look forward to fun and creative improv games. There is a performance element for all those interested in showcasing the skills that have been taught over the eight-week course. Learn to think on your feet and to become an active listener, and have fun while doing it! Class Limit: 15 Friday: Physics II This workshop we will continue to explore the fun world of physics. We will make ice cream, and build boats, and experiments with electricity. These are just some of the fun projects we will complete in this workshop.Class Limit: 15 Computer Animation Have you ever wanted to create full-color flashy animation? Join us for part 2 of the animation program, and explore your creativity in the art of moving pictures. We will be using Adobe FLASH to create short personal animation projects. Students will have the opportunity to create their very own artwork in the computer and animate it, with the possibility of adding titles and sound effects. Class Limit: 10 Literary Magazine Join the team to create a hands-on “Lit Mag.” We’ll start by reviewing student work from the previous workshops ‘Write-On’’ and ‘Poetry.’ The group will select pieces, add other original writing, and create unique artwork. In addition we will find quotes from other authors’ works, polls, puzzles, editorials, and other factual articles relevant to Chen-Ex. Each student will create their own personal ‘Zine’ to share with the community. Class Limit: 12
